2. DESCRIPTION

First of all, let’s clarify what a decanter is. The decanter is the special container into which the wine is poured to separate it from any solid parts and also to make it “oxygenate” and “open” so that it can best express its scents and aromas.

We come to our question: should red wine be decanted?

Full-bodied red wines such as Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Roero, require proper decanting. This is because they are wines aged at least 2 or 3 years in wood and for this reason, they need to be oxygenated. Vintage red wines, on the other hand, do not need to be moved to the decanter: just open the bottle, pour the wine into the glass, and wait a few minutes before drinking it. A freshly uncorked aged wine is in fact waking up from a long sleep and needs time to recover calmly to give the best of itself.
Pouring the wine into the Decanter is as if we were thrown, still asleep, directly from the bed into a tub with water and ice. It is certainly not a good awakening and I doubt that there is anyone who wishes to be awakened this way. Our mood could be affected for the whole day!
Our advice is to uncork the wine well in advance before drinking it. If the wine has aged over 10 years, even 3-4 hours earlier.
The oxygen that enters from the neck of the uncorked bottle is enough to make it open calmly.
Once poured into the glass, we wait even a minute before tasting it and sip it calmly. The wine slowly oxygenates inside the glass and, between the first, second, and third sip, we will already be able to perceive the evolution of the nectar and the wonderful variety of aromas that the wine will be able to express.
